Cody and Katy

Here's a new picture of Miss Katy and Master Cody. I pray they will look back at this picture someday and know that what's so important in this life is how we treat our own family...to always love each other and help each other out BEFORE ANYONE ELSE!, meaning that our family comes first -- which we tend to forget once we get out in the world and meet others.

Here's a picture of little Cortez before he left for Germany with his parents. He's playing with Grandma Mary's little back scratcher...while she sits back and pulls her hair out! LOLOL Seriously, I'm sure they're both having a grand time. He and his parents will be soooo missed. We pray they'll hurry back for a visit.

Hurricane Ike

We got home on Tuesday, September 16 and found our home intact. I will send pictures later of what our yard looks like. We lost one branch in our front yard. Thank God we had trimmed that tree considerably...it fell on a cactus we needed to get rid of anyway!

The backyard is a mess. We lost a tree that was in a corner...it fell over the elephant ears we had growing right in front of it. It narrowly missed another tree in front of it, which if it had brought it along, would have landed on our sunroom or maybe the kitchen. We lost the entire back yard fence...pulled right out along with the concrete that was poured to hold the main posts. Wow. The side fence that separates the next door neighbor fell. The other neighbor's fence (separating our houses) was okay.

We had some leakage in our sunroom. Our ficus plant, which we planted when we first moved into this house, was uprooted -- laying across the length of the sunroom. Guy thinks we can replant since some of the roots were still attached. But this is the weird thing: I had a small statue of St. Francis of Assisi, about 15 inches high, standing a top of a slab of tile (to keep it straight). In his hands he holds 2 small doves, which DO NOT EVER stay in place. I have to keep propping them into his hands. Right behind him is a pretty cross -- one that's supposed to go in gardens (I bought it at Hobby Lobby.) I think Elda gave me St. Francis. Anyway, here's the kicker: Ficus is down by the roots. St. Francis is left standing, hold doves, with cross still intact! Is that not unbelievable?

Reminds me also of when Hurricane Rita hit our home in Lake Charles, too. Took out all of our back yard fence but kept the side fence, with a large cross stuck to the fence, intact. Wow.

More news to follow I guess. Love ya'll.

Deon Robinson

We wish to send condolences to Jennifer Davis-Robinson on the passing of her husband, Deon. Deon was 45 years old and passed away on Saturday, September 13. He was to have celebrated a birthday on September 21st. Deon was a good husband and father to Cody and Katy. We know he is sitting in the presence of the Almighty and raising his arms to praise Him.

Mitzcli Davis' double

Oh, my gosh. This could be my baby, Mitzcli. At least when he was one year old. I had to share this picture because it is so like him! Love that dog. :)

Israel and Katriana's wedding

Here we have Elda, Me, my sister-in-law, Petra, and Teresita. We attended Israel and Kat's wedding on Sunday, June 27th. And what a great wedding it was! Bride and groom were awesome (I was going to say radiant, but that would only be the bride and not exactly how the groom looked...how about handsome?) Here's wishing the best to them: may they always find happiness in everything they do with each other; may they always look to each other and to God for any help; and may they never forget the love they have for each other -- always remember the first time you fell in love.

GrandKids Visiting!

Yes, folks, we got 'em! Two of 'em. How they have grown! One has freckles stretching across his nose...cute as a button, plays a mean video game, loves baseball and good at it too; and the other one! Cute smile, expressive eyes, quick wit (or so I think) great mimic (like her YaYa ;) and questions everything! Cody and Katy are here! And boy, am I tired! I got to work this morning...thank God Guy took them to school for me, but when I walked in to work, I plopped down on my chair and said, "Whew. I'm so glad to be at work so I can rest." Just kidding folks. Seriously, they are the reasons one stays so young at heart and sometimes (not always) in body. They give us our exercise. They keep our heart pumping. They teach us again, but in my case...a very difficult lesson!...to be more patient and more diplomatic. Thank God for Guy, who is really the one who does that part. Me, I just yell. I wouldn't be YaYa if I didn't! Love those kids. Welcome Cody and Katy. We love you. I shall post pictures in the coming weeks of these tykes.

In Memory of Little Jasmine

My sweet, dear Jasmine passed away on Monday, April 28. I came home and found her gone. She was approx. 13 or 14 years old. She leaves behind her terrible brother, Mitzcli, the Aztec czar, who lived only to bother her constantly, but she thrived on that. She also leaves behind little Astro. Mitzcli will miss her terribly, as he has already showed us...he wonders where Jasmine is when he goes outside, he looks behind him to see if she is there. When we drop him treats, he looks around to see if she is there so he can grab hers. She joins her beloved (okay, that is stretching it a bit) Boomer in Heaven. Will miss her lots. Goodbye my sweet angel.

Rude Awakening

Okay, don't know what happened here, but at about 2:30 a.m. Guy and I were awakened by the screamings of little Astro, little quiet Astro, the perfect little lady. And I could hear her "hitting" something while she was screaming! I jumped out of bed (my whole life seems to be me jumping out of bed, etc.)and saw her standing in front of the door leading outside to our backyard. Looking out the window...(it's our sunroom. I couldn't imagine what could have happened! I was shaking like a leaf it was such a horrible scream! Okay, I'm over it. :) This is a small pic of what she probably looked like as she was screaming.

Lots of Happenings - some sad, some not!

Well, where shall I start? Perhaps with the fun. Mitzcli was, again, sprayed. This time we were armed and ready! Immediately grab a towel; immediately open can (this time it took cans :) ) of tomato sauce (by the way, I went out and bought a can of tomato soup...this works best); and we were able to keep the pesky smell away. We're getting to be quite good at this!

Now for some sad news. We had to put little Oreo to sleep...on a Saturday, March 8. She had woken us up on Friday morning (about 4 am.) with a scream of pain. When I went to check on her, she was lying on her side in bed...I gently picked up her head and she did not respond. She was breathing very shallowly. I told Guy she would probably not last the next few hours. We went back to bed. In the morning when we woke up, she was up and eating. We were sitting watching TV when we heard the scream again. This time she was lying on the some newspapers and I gently picked her up and knew this had to be the time. We called the VET and were able to bring her in at 10. I handed her to the Doctor, and immediately broke down in tears. Guy had to lead me out. I was able to come in and kiss her little head and knew that she was finally not in pain. She was a good dog. It was extremely hard to tell my mom-in-law, but we had to.

My Other Big Brother - Jr.

I just realized that I let my brother Jr's birthday slip by...a bit late I might add. So sorry. If memory serves me right, I did send you a birthday, card, didn't I? January 20th was Jr.'s birthday and I didn't visit my site to announce it. My bad. By the way, he is doing a great job of handling the taking care of my mother. He takes her to doctor's appts., out to dinner, etc. THX for everything you, Rosie, and your kids do.

Mitzcli's Recent happening!

Word to the wise, thank God for tomato sauce!!! And the fact that I had bought those little suckers and happened to have them.

I had gotten up because the Mitzcli woke me up. As I groggly walked towards the living room to let him out, I noticed the front door wide open; a siloutte of a pretty dark cat in front of the door...just staring at the open door. Dog heads straight for door, probably thinking: "Oooh, what's out there?" I yell, "Stop!" He does. Cat skeedaddles in opposite direction. I shut and lock door. Climb back in bad (and quite forgetting why I had originally gotten up in the first place!) telling Guy, "You forgot to lock the door." Dog immediately jumps off bed...again. Wants out. Okay by me; I'm awake anyway! Open door, see him immediately (yes, this all happens immediately!; not in slow motion.) growls at something just to the right of the door, which I always close becuase the cat will want to wander out, too. Oh, my! He's seen a cat in our back yard and has it surrounded...but the poor cat is not "skeedaddling." (I love that word) I open door and yell, "No, Mitzcli, stop!" and notice that this beautiful, sleek, black "cat" also has a cute little black and white striped tail! (think: Pepi LaPew) Of course, my dashing, tough, I-will-save-you Mommy cutie is yes, immediately, sprayed. He skeedaddles away from the cutie-pie: I yell "Guy! Mitzcli has a skunk cornered!" Poor Guy is brought back to life from a very deep sleep! I open door, tell Mitzcli to come in; he runs in (and here I will add, not smelling too pretty :) ) IMMEDIATELY runs to the couch and starts rubbing around on the couch and my sweater! I yell no! He runs into bedroom (could this possibly get any funnier?) and begins to roll around the bed -- my side! Guy yells, "what do we do?" I say, "wait a minute...tomato soup" but then I wanted to bash my brains in. I didn't want to use my coveted La Madeleine tomato soup (put your own choice Spanish words here!) then I remembered: tomato sauce is almost the same thing! Guy cannot believe he is hearing this: keeps asking me, "are you sure?" I say yes, I am sure. We open can...(after I tell him what do we have to lose?) he starts (to the tune of New York, New York!) spreading the goo...rinses him off, sprays a little (and let me warn you now folks, do not try this at home!) Euphoria (Patricia, you know what this is! :) and man, does he smell semi-good. I will never wear Euphoria again.
All's well that ends well! Mitzcli then crawled in right next to me and stayed there the whole night. Needless to say, I slept very little...I even thought about getting up to write this or visiting The Hobbit on PS2 and starting from the very beginning. Well, that's it folks. I just had to share the good times Guy and I have here in Missouri City,,,where the dogs are dogs and the skunks come right up to your house and look in. I really think that skunk must have seen Astro (the cat) looking out the window beckening it towards the house. It could happen! Have a wonderful Monday...I know I will!

It's December - Merry Christmas!

Just want to wish everybody a Merry Christmas. I hope your holidays are spent with your loved ones and that you get everything you want/need!
Guy got me a vaccuum cleaner for Christmas. We are the type of people that when we need something, well, we buy it! Okay, so the vaccuum cleaner will not be wrapped or put under the tree, but that's because I'll probably have to start using it immediately! Guy will be getting a 42 inch plasma TV and it's TV holder. Of course, we will most definitely not wrap it or put it under the tree seeing as how he will immediately want to start hooking it up. And, of course, he will have paid for it himself (okay, with my help, too.)so, no surprise there. I also got him a coffee table book on the pictures taken by some photographer while the made-for-TV movie was being made: Lonesome Dove. Just one of his all-time favorites. That's no surprise either since he accidently saw where I hid it and knows it's there. Well, I'll try and get some photos for you guys as soon as I can.
We've sort of moved in, but still have a lot of boxes that we need to unpack. At least the kitchen and the bedroom are set up! We also now have buyer for our house in Lake Charles. So, that is really coming out great now. Gonna miss Old Lake Charles, that's for sure. I'll keep you posted. Mitzcli and Jasmine and Astro and Oreo say hello to all.

I'm BACK!!!!

Greetings! So much has happened, first in line is the fact that I could't remember my sign in name and password...darn it. But I happened to notice that I had this filed away (thank God!) so, I didn't have to long to look.
Well, Guy and I are living in Houston, in a condo thanks to the generosity of a fine friend and the work of God in our lives. It's too amazing. Guy has started work and he loves it. Looks like he's going to be a bit busy for a while, until he settles down to a routine.
We should be moving to our own house (1542 Hilton Head) prayerfully, by the end of October or beginning of November. I MISS MY LITTLE PUMPKINS! Man, I miss their yapping and their licking my face and their cute little looks and their meowing and following me around and all sorts of other things. LOL
We will be putting our home up for sale in Lake Charles. Man, good memories there. Great neighbors, great location, etc. But we really can't keep two houses (I wish!) So, now that I'm back, I'm here to stay.
Oh, by the way, I did also begin working at Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, again (two years ago I left after five years with them) in the exact same spot I was in when I left. WOW. Is God gracious or what? AND, I had my 52nd birthday in September. Whew. I'm tired. So much has happened in the span of one month. Later troops!

16th Wedding Anniversary

Guy and I took a great 16th Wedding Anniversary to New Orleans. Guy explains:

We received 3 blessings on Saturday in New Orleans. We went to Jackson Square for café au lait and beignets at Café du Monde. We parked in back on the Mississippi River and as we walked to Café we heard beautiful voices singing hymns! Mennonite choir singing a capella. We stood and listened to the music filling the square. They were part of a permanent contingency to help with Katrina recovery. You should have seen some of the looks from the people passing on the street.

After breakfast we walked toward the French Market and stopped at a bookstore that had a beautifully illustrated Brer Rabbit book. We talked to the owner, a very nice soft spoken Nawlins' drawl. Later, after shopping in the French Market we came back to the bookstore to buy the book, he said, "I knew you would come back and I have something extra for you." He showed me a small metal box with a Papal insignia on top and 2 wafers inside. "You know what this is?" I said "no." He said "I am ordained as a deacon in the Catholic Church and I would like to bless you." He made the sign of the cross in a blessing in front of us and then touched my forehead making a cross, which he recited in Latin! (This was just so awesome, it brought tears to my eyes!! - Meli)

After leaving the bookstore we walked in front of Café du Monde where the little 3-piece band was playing. Feeling generous and blessed we dropped a $5 in the bucket. The leader of the band said "Hey, come here." I got something for you. "For a $20 donation to rebuilding our church destroyed by Katrina, I will give you this CD." Hack Bartholomew (hackb.com) blessed us with some great jazz gospel music on our way back home.

We had a wonderful weekend. We were able to come back home on Saturday, really quick trip! By the by, we inadvertantly left Astro locked in our bedroom. Needless to say, she tried desperately to get out! Poor baby. She was so pissed at us that she pooped on my side of the bed! I didn't notice (NO, I DID NOT GET IN BED WHEN I FOUND IT!) until I pulled the sheets back, getting ready to crawl in bed when I noticed. I had to sleep in another room :)

Spring is in the air

Along with all the crud coming off the trees! Yikes! I had to "sprinkle" my car this morning just to get the yellow stuff that's been sitting on it from the weekend! I don't get it: are the trees getting rid of the old leaves to make way for the new? Becuz there is so much junk coming down from them! Guy (God love him!) has been needling me to take pics of the outside of the house...we've hung some pretty baskets of flowers in the front and I made a wreath in celebration of Easter coming up! So, I will try and follow up with pics in the next week or so.

Katy's Broken Arm!

Little Katy broke her arm. She fell off a trampoline that didn't have the "cage" that is supposed to go around it. 'Nuff said. :) Anyway, she's fine, had some pins put in her little left arm, around the elbow area. As we all know, lots of kids are really resilient, so let's pray she'll be up and around soon.

Astro is Back!

Yippee! I was coming home on Friday after work and praying...yep, praying for something to happen. I had started praying since she first came up "missing" and had come to a full knowledge that God was in control, that he would deliver her to me -- whether in a good way or bad. Well, I had prayed that Friday extra hard because we have had some cold and wet nights, and I was worried. Lo and behold, a Siamese crossed by path about four blocks from our house. It wasn't Astro, but I couldn't believe that I would even see one out and about! As I turned the corner one block from our house -- I noticed another Siamese cross by path about 1/2 a block away. I couldn't help muttering out loud how God would throw two of the same species of cats in front of me -- never having seen to many in one day! I stopped the car; rolled down the window and called out her name. She stopped...she turned to look at me...she meowed. I knew right away. It took about 10 min. of coaxing, but she finally came to me. I wrapped my arms around her not knowing exactly how I was going to get her in the car (she scratches!) and she lived up to that! She gave me a good long scratch on the palm of my hand just as I was in front of that open window! I threw thru the window and she cowered until I got in. After that, she settled down. She has been one happy camper since. I've had to sleep with her 'cause I am just so happy to have her with me! So, please remember this: God does answer prayers. They may not be quite the way we would like them answered...I even had doubts I would see her alive, but I quickly pushed those thoughts away knowing full well that only One was in control, and He never lets us down.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Just wanted to let you know that my baby, Astro, is missing. She went away on Thursday, January 18th. She got out of the house by opening the screen door...at 3 a.m., while Guy was letting the dogs take a walk and pee. I miss her terribly...I call her name everyday while I'm outside with the dogs...as if she would hear and answer. {sniff} I pray that she's in someone's house right now all warm and cozy and driving them nuts by wanting to sit on their laps and just let them cuddle her and pet her.

Greetings!

Just wanted to let you all know that I'll be posting some pics of my visit with my mom in the "sunny" Rio Grande Valley. Only it wasn't sunny...it was cold. There were thoughts it might snow or sleet. None of which happened. And I was soooo prepared for it. Shucks. Anyway, will be posting soon. I haven't forgotten!!!

Happy Veteran's Day - November 11, 2006

Below is a speech that my nephew (blog name: Master Gunner) prepared and gave for some students in Mission, Texas.

Introduction:

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, Teachers, students, and, most of all, my fellow Veterans and their families. I am humbled, and honored to be able to stand here today and speak to all of you. Before we can begin to appreciate the meaning of Veterans Day, we should first look at the history behind the occasion:

Veterans Day is the American name for the international day called Armistice Day. It falls on 11 November, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War One. The same day is observed elsewhere as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. All major hostilities of World War 1 were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. Armistice Day was first commemorated in the United States by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, and many states made it a legal holiday. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 inviting all Americans to observe the day, and made it a legal holiday nationwide in 1938. The holiday has been observed annually on November 11 since that date - first as Armistice Day, later as Veterans Day.

On November 11, 1953, the citizens of Emporia, Kansas staged a Veterans Day observance in lieu of an Armistice Day remembrance. Congressman Ed Rees of Emporia, Kansas subsequently introduced legislation in the United States House of Representatives to officially change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day. The name of the holiday was changed on 1 June 1954, to honor those who served in all American wars. In the 230 years since we declared Independence and fought to become a nation of free men and women, the United States has fought valiantly to preserve that freedom, and secure that freedom for people throughout the world who live under tyranny and oppression. The United States has fought in every region of the world. Now, we find ourselves in a Global War, against enemies that don’t wear uniforms or recognize any laws or conventions. We find ourselves in a struggle that threatens not only our National Security and the safety of our friends and families, but our very way of life. Our enemy has declared that the very things that make us Americans, is what makes them despise us. Our enemy doesn’t believe in the Freedom of a person to choose his or her religion, or choose what books to read, what music to listen to, or what movies to watch, or even the right of a person to choose to speak out against what they see as wrong. Extremism of any kind is never open to opinions that are not their own.

I want there to be no mistake: we as a nation are dedicated to the well-being of our most precious resource, our mothers and fathers, our brothers and sisters serving in our military.
We are asked to keep America safe from an enemy who is indifferent to how many people they kill, and do not differentiate between Soldiers or civilians.
We are asked to keep America Safe from an enemy who doesn’t care if he destroys Barracks, or churches and schools.
We are asked to keep America Safe from an enemy who doesn’t care how much violence they cause.
We are asked to keep America Safe from an enemy who hates the very things our great Nation was founded on: freedom, liberty, and democratic process.
We fight against an enemy who only wants to dominate, control, and dictate.
So how do we, as Americans, know we will win this War?

We can be confident of our success because our Nation has the dedicated men and women of our Armed Forces fighting for freedom, just as the generations before them fought for the very same values that we’re fighting for today. In the words of GEN Douglas MacArthur “No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation.”
We have without a doubt the finest and best trained Soldiers our Army, and the entire world, has ever seen. They are war fighters, statesmen, diplomats, and community leaders, and they do these things all at once.

They can adapt to any situation, they can overcome any obstacle, and they can win on any battlefield. The Soldier, the veteran, is tenacious. He or she will never quit. They will fight to win, until there is no enemy left to overcome. One of my personal Heroes, General George Patton, once said : “Americans, traditionally love to fight. All real Americans, love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers ... Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time.”

To put this into perspective, imagine, if you will: Throw everything you need for a year into two duffel bags. All you pants, shirts, socks, and underwear. Grab a weapon, that you will keep with you, within arm’s reach, for the rest of the foreseeable future. It’s with you when you go to the bathroom, it’s with you when you sleep, it’s with you when you eat, or even just relaxing for a few minutes. Put a Kevlar helmet on our head, and a flack vest on your upper body. You’ll be wearing it most of the time while you’re gone. Say goodbye to your family, and get on an airplane to fly halfway around the world, so that you can put yourself in mortal danger every single second, of every single minute, of every single hour, of every single day of the time that you are gone. Think about that for a second. And think about the fact that you don’t know when you’ll come back. You might come back in six months, you might come back in a year, you may even come back in more than a year. You may not even come back at all...

Now, imagine actually doing it, without complaining or bellyaching to anyone. Take a second and look to the person on your right hand side. Now look to the person on your left hand side. Look at the person in front of you, and then look at the person sitting behind you. Being a Soldier, knowingly putting yourself in danger, for those people, and all the people in this auditorium, all of America, is one of the most selfless things that a person can do. And each and every one of the veterans in this room made that choice.

Each and every single of the Veterans we honor today, made that same choice I just asked you to imagine yourself making.
Some of those Veterans saw combat. Some of them didn’t. Some of those Veterans spent the entire term in their branch of service never having to deploy. But all of them made the decision to serve.

I like to think that everyone lives by a personal code, a personal motto. Mine is: “Always do the right thing, even when no one is looking”. That motto has kept me out of more trouble than I care to remember. The Veterans that we honor on this day, did the right thing. They served something that was much larger and more important to them than their own self-interests. They served a Nation founded on Ideas that we will always hold dear. Words like Liberty, Courage, Freedom, and Democracy. The Founding Fathers of our country realized, from the very beginning, that the idea of a Free Republic would be meaningless without the Blood and commitment of patriots to serve that idea. They knew that, without people who would fight for the idea, the Republic could not survive.

And, as we all know, the United States has survived for over two-hundred and thirty years.
On this Veterans Day, we must remember the millions of men and women, those alive, and those no longer with us, that have served, given selflessly of themselves, and put themselves in personal danger, to make sure you could enjoy the freedoms that I know you would never take for granted.

Texans have fought in every American War since we were made a state. We’ve fought in the Battle of Palmetto Ranch in the Civil War, just a few miles from here. We rode with Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders at the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War. In the Battle of the Somme in 1918, we stood shoulder to shoulder with the British, and pushed the German Imperial Forces back to where they started four years before. Texans fought on both the European and Pacific fronts during World War Two, from the Kasserine Pass to the shores of Iwo Jima. We stormed the beaches of Normandy, and we helped relieve the encircled forces at Bastogne. In 1950, we landed with General MacArthur at Inchon, and helped to recapture Seoul in what is now South Korea. In 1968, Soldiers and Marines from Texas helped to defend Hue City in Vietnam against a deadly North Vietnamese Offensive. In Operation Just Cause, Texas Soldiers were part of the effort to bring Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega to justice. We fought in the Battle of 73 Easting in the First Gulf War, and helped destroy over 300 Tanks and Personnel carriers in the Battle of Medina Ridge. In 2001, Texans were part of the overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and in 2003, we destroyed the Iraqi Republican Guard. The Fourth Infantry Division from Fort Hood, Texas captured Saddam Hussein. The First Cavalry Division from Fort Hood took the brunt of the attacks from the Mahdi Army Uprising in April 2004 and wiped out over 80% of Muqtada Al-Sadr’s militia.
None of these things would have been accomplished, none of these battle would have been won, if it wasn’t for the efforts of the guy on the ground who got his boots dirty, the guy who ate the cold chow, the guy who marched through the snow of Europe, the mud of Vietnam, and the deserts of Iraq. America would not have tasted victory, if it hadn’t been for the blood, the sweat, or the bravery of the American veteran.

As General Norman Schwarzkopf once put it, “It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle; it takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle.” Ladies and gentlemen, we are indeed blessed with a great multitude of heroes who put their lives on the line to serve and protect the citizens of a grateful Nation. I am absolutely and unequivocally proud of the fine men and women I have the pleasure of serving with. They constantly go above and beyond the call of duty, and they are without a doubt the heroes of their generations.

Let us not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country as well as those who have been severely injured. We do not take their sacrifice lightly. We will continue to honor their memory their legacy of patriotism, their bravery under fire. They will never be forgotten.

A great British Statesman and friend to the American people, Sir Winston Churchill, once said:
"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

Thank you for your time, and God Bless America.
